Quiet Lights 2018

Music & Culture Festival

Cork, Ireland

07.09.18 - 09.09.18

Quiet Lights is a unique and new little festival with a big heart, shining lights on the new wave of Irish folk and traditional talent that are quietly making waves, forging new paths, recollecting old tales and making new stories.

Collaborating closely with festival runner Jonathan Pearson (head of Irish music company, Islander) the aim was to produce branding for the festival that expressed the passionate but mellow tone that the music inhabited. Translating that feeling into a look required delving into those safe and quiet images that come to us when we are most at peace. Three main images came to the fore, all presenting the idea of light in different ways, star and moonlight, lighthouses, street lamps on empty motorways. I designed these images into stripped back illustrations which all could work individually, as promotional assets or be combined to form a collage of quiet light.

Representing light, a beacon, whose glow will always draw the eye, as a still image has it’s limitations and so the three pieces were animated each with their own unique movement but also with the common theme off the horizontally moving waves emanating from the centre. The website too, featured the animations prominently (quietlights.net).

The festival allowed me the exciting opportunity to utilise the most skills in one project up to this point with the usual, graphic design, web design and web development combined with illustration skills as well as animation (an area I very nearly went into full time). It’s these multi-faceted projects that draw the most creative growth for me.

The festival was a beautiful experience of community and wonderful music. Congratulations to all involved, I’m proud to be numbered among them.
